bootees for a lego baby?

This week I've been working on baby bootees for my friend's friend. They didn't exactly turn out the way I wanted them to... They look like they would fit a baby with a very square foot... Like a lego baby.

The main problem with the bootee pattern is this: The bottom of the foot is extremely square, and that attribute is made more pertinent by the line of stitches along the edge of the sole. It just... doesn't look right. It's like it was meant to fit a baby with a square foot. Baby Cubix anyone? Or that creepy TV show on Qubo with the animals made out of blocks...

The second attempt at making this pattern was slightly more successful because I altered the sole slightly. The difference is that it is less square and more rounded. You know, more foot-shaped.

You can see the difference in the first one I made (bottom) and the second one I made (top). All I did to make it more round instead of square is I turned it inside out when I started knitting the sole. It makes the line of loops go on the inside of the shoe instead of outside. Pretty neat, huh??

The cuff is probably my favorite part of the bootee... It has a hidden inner layer of 1x1 rib that hugs tightly to the ankle and makes sure the bootee stays on, but then the cuff that folds over is made with a cute little stockinette stitch.

I used #1 bamboo circulars and Stroll sock yarn. The pattern is called "Hodge" and can be found as a free Ravelry download.

  1. Thanks Trevor :) Apparently they were well-received by my friend's friend, so that's all that I was worried about.
